Contact: One 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour lecture/seminar each week, and 20 hours of practical observations with associated tasks.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate detailed knowledge of the patterns of development characteristic of each of the specific dimensions of development;
- show familiarity with the variations in these patterns throughout childhood;
- appreciate the complex interrelationship between development in each of the dimensions; and
- show familiarity with the key psychological and biological theories and methodological approaches used in the study of child development.
Content:
A detailed introduction to the physical, cognitive-intellectual, social-emotional and communicative development of the child from birth to eight years from the disciplinary perspectives of psychology and biology. Patterns of development, variations in these patterns, critical introduction to key theories and methods used in the study of child development.
Assessment:
A project comprising presentation and evaluation of practical observations conducted during the semester, or equivalent task (50 per cent); and a 3-hour examination (50 per cent).
