Contact: Two 2-hour sessions per week using a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, workshops, field work and excursions.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- have gained an understanding of some of the early and present day influences on Australian society;
- have an awareness of the representation of some of these influences in Australian imaginative literature;
- have a familiarity with the differing perspectives offered by history, sociology and literature; and
- demonstrate an ability to express ideas, understand arguments and respond to material related to Australian society.
Content:
An introductory study of some of the major influences on and representations of the men, women and children in Australian society in the early nineteenth century and the present day.
Assessment:
Two essays of 2,000 words each or equivalent (50 per cent each).
