Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- clarify the concept of technology;
- understand values and how they fit within traditional ethical frameworks;
- apply philosophic methodology by means of rational argument and conceptual analysis;
- discuss how ethics might be applied to technology and to education; and
- understand how technology influences our environment and impinges on our political ideals.
Content:
Definitions of technology; cost risk and cost benefit analysis; ethics and ethical theory; technology and the environment; technology and politics; technology and the human condition; implications for education.
Assessment:
A presentation of a class assignment of 1,500 words (30 per cent); an essay of 3,000 words (70 per cent).
