773-001 Gender Studies in Education and Training

Elective Bach. Education subject.

Credit points: 16.7

Contact: Twelve 3-hour lecture/seminars.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

Content:

Sex role development, physiological and psychological differences between the sexes, sex roles and gender roles. Social conceptions of gender role, racial and cultural differences, the influence of family and class on gender, gender and education, a framework for understanding the reproduction of gender differences in educational institutions and educational pathways and outcomes, gender and the curriculum, gender relations and the workplace, concepts of work, domestic, formal and informal work, work as employment, gender differences in work experience, case studies illustrating gender differences in educational and professional practice.

Assessment:

A seminar paper equivalent to 1,500 words (30 per cent); a paper of 3,000 words on gender in education and/or workplace (70 per cent).
