Year 4 Mgt. & Industrial Relns.
Credit points: 12.5
Coordinator: Ms J. Wolfram Cox
Prerequisite: 327-201 Organisational Behaviour
Contact: Classes totalling 3 hours per week throughout the semester.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should:
- have an understanding of theories of change (and continuity) in organisations at each of the three major levels of analysis: individual, group and organisation;
- be able to compare and contrast different approaches to organisational change and development;
- have an understanding of the issues involved in applying these theories and approaches to current cases in change management, and to their own experiences.
Content:
This course will examine the links between the theoretical bases of change and its practice in organisations. Emphasis will be placed on the interdependence of individual, group and organisational change. At the individual level, topics may include adult development and learning, transitions, careers and competencies. Group dynamics and task group development will be included in the analysis of group change. At the organisational level, different typologies and theories of change will be compared and integrated through topics such as leadership and membership in change, culture and climate, and organisational learning. Approaches to organisational change management will include organisation development, action research, process and mangement consulting. Current applied issues in change and change management will focus on changing boundaries: at the individual level, topics may include changing identities, work and non-work, the role of emotion, and privacy; at the group level paradoxes of group membership will be addressed with attention to issues such as diversity and gender; organisational level change issues will include the implications of efforts such as organisational merger, total quality management, benchmarking, enterprise agreements, downsizing, reengineering and reinvention.
Assessment:
A 3-hour end-of-semester examination (80%) and assignments totalling no more than 2,000 words (20%).
