Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- understand the main theories used in the study of regional and urban economics;
- judge the usefulness and the limitations of advanced theory in the area of regional and urban economics;
- critically evaluate contemporary policy debates in the area of regional and urban economics with reference to advanced economic theory;
- extend their knowledge of regional and urban economics via independent study and by taking advanced subjects in this area.
Content:
Recent developments in theory pertaining to spatial arrangement of economic activity; current policy issues. Topics selected from: urban transportation and land use; regional growth and unemployment; uncertainty and location; factor mobility; analysis of market areas; implications of developments in information technology for the location of activity; the spatial diffusion of innovations.
Assessment:
A 3-hour examination (80 per cent) and class assignments totalling approximately 2,000 words (20 per cent).
