Prerequisite: 316-201 Intermediate Macro-economics and 316-202 Intermediate Micro-economics.
Contact: Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial a week.

Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- extend their knowledge of money and banking via the independent study of books and articles dealing with theory and policy in this area and by taking advanced subjects dealing with these matters;
- judge the usefulness and the limitations of existing theory in the area of money and banking;
- critically evaluate contemporary policy debates in the area of money and banking with reference to economic theory.
Content:
The role of money and monetary policy in the macroeconomy. Topics include: fundamentals of financial markets and institutions with particular emphasis on money and the banks; the supply of money and the conduct and effectiveness of monetary policy. International aspects will be considered where appropriate.
Assessment:
A 2-hour examination (80 per cent) and class assignments totalling 2,000 words (20 per cent).
