Prerequisite: 316-129 Business Statistics or 316-130 Quantitative Methods 1. Pre or co requisite: 316-202 Intermediate Microeconomics. This subject is not available to students who have previously passed 316-313 Microeconomics.
Contact: Three hours a week of seminars / lectures / tutorials.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should:
- understand how economic questions can be formulated using mathematics;
- be able to write down and manipulate mathematical models of the consumer and producer;
- be able to use differential and difference equations to examine the dynamic properties of microeconomic and macroeconomic models;
- have some appreciation of the concept of duality in economics.
Content:
The subject will cover (in mathematical terms) many of the areas treated more intuitively in introductory courses in macroeconomics and microeconomics - e. g. macroeconomic dynamics, consumer demand, the theory of the firm, and imperfect competition.
Assessment:
A 2-hour end-of-semester examination (80 per cent) and tutorial exercises of up to 30 pages in total (20 per cent).
