Sociology (Interdepartmental Program)

Overview

Convenor: Mark Considine (Dept of Political Science)

The Faculty of Arts offers a program in Sociology which deals with issues such as the way individual identities are formed, the role of the group, the nature of socialisation, the role of local and mass culture, differences in family and kinship systems, class and social stratification, relations between societies and their natural environments, the role of social movements, and problems of social change.

The program assists students to develop skills in sociological methods and to learn to become effective social researchers in their own right. The emphasis of the program is upon the application of sociological theory and methods to practical problems and contemporary issues such as unemployment, homelessness, violence against women, AIDS, Americanisation of local cultures, and problems of race and ethnicity.

The Interdepartmental Program is located in the Department of Political Science, and includes contributions from Anthropology, Criminology, Geography, Education and Social Theory. Students normally take a common first-year and may then choose from a range of second and third year core units and electives.

Prerequisites

The general prerequisite for all second and third year subjects in the ID program in Sociology is 25 points of first year Sociology subjects. Students with a 12.5 point Sociology subject and another first year subject from Anthropology, Criminology, Political Science or Geography may also proceed.
