Modern Greek (Department of Language Studies)

Overview

The Modern Greek program concentrates on the literature, culture, society, history and language of contemporary Greece, Cyprus and Greeks in Australia. Non-language subjects include Mythologies: Literature, History and Society in Modern Greece, Greek Australian Literature, and The Greeks in Australia. Study of the language may commence at Beginners, Intermediate or Advanced level or in selected domains of usage (formal, informal and colloquial, katharevousa, creative writing and translation of literary, government, business, medical and legal documents). Original literary and other texts are examined in Modern Greek Poetry, Prose Fiction, Folk Literature, Theatre, and the Language Controversy.

Students must contact the Department before enrolling, in order to determine the language stream or level in which they enrol. Placement will be based on the students' VCE results, other language study record or a placement test. In their first year, high school graduates from Greece or Cyprus, or those with an A+ VCE result, should enrol in two of the post-advanced language subjects (150-185 and 150-171). However, their enrolment will remain provisional until confirmed or, alternatively, altered in the light of new evidence that might emerge during the first weeks of teaching. As far as possible, changes will be notified in the first two weeks of the semester. Changes in weeks 3 and 4 will have to be reported to the Associate Dean.

Students may take single subjects (including language subjects) at any level, or a full major leading to Honours and Postgraduate degrees. A broader approach might include subjects relating to earlier phases of Hellenism (Ancient Greek, Classical Studies, Archaeology, Byzantium) or other areas such as linguistics, European studies, cultural studies, migration, other literatures and literary theory.

Language students are encouraged to spend time in Greece or Cyprus during their studies. A number of scholarships are available, and in certain cases credit may be granted for subjects undertaken overseas.

Requirements for a Major

The Modern Greek major comprises a minimum of five subjects at second and third year level totalling 83.3 points (e. g. five second or third year semester subjects, each worth 16.7 points). The minimum language requirement for a major in Modern Greek is Intermediate Modern Greek B or equivalent.

Entry to Honours

Honours (fourth year) in Hellenic Studies is a Combined Honours program and can be taken only in conjunction with another Combined Honours program. Many students choose to combine Hellenic Studies with Classical Studies or Ancient Greek. The prerequisites are satisfying the requirements for the BA, a major in Modern Greek (including, if desired, one subject of Greek interest from the Classical Studies program) with an H2A result or better in at least one of these subjects and an overall average grade of H2B or better, and language study to at least Intermediate B level. Students must also meet the Honours Requirements in the combining department.

Honours Requirements

Honours students enrol in the Honours Seminar in Hellenic Studies (150-462, 16.7 points), an appropriate language subject (16.7 points) and, if their thesis is in Modern Greek, for the Honours Thesis in Modern Greek (150-461, 33.3 points).
