This program provides an integrated approach to the languages of Europe (including Russian) and their literatures and cultures. The program requires the first-year subject noted below plus two years of work in a European language (which can be commenced at second year), and second or third-year studies from a set of designated subjects from other departments.
Objectives: students will acquire an overall concept of Europe in both its unity and diversity. They will understand the reasons for the move towards integration, and also the problems. They will be able to imagine various alternatives regarding the future development of the extended European community, and to apply these to a range of diverse situations.
A major in Modern European Studies requires the completion of at least five subjects at second and third-year levels, totalling 83.3 points, which must include two semesters of language study in a European language, at a minimum of intermediate standard in a European Language. The normal prerequisite for entry into the major in Modern European Studies is completion of the first-year subjects 126-122 Introduction to Contemporary Europe: Politics, Identity and Culture A (ICEPIC A) and 126-123 Introduction to Contemporary Europe: Politics, Identity and Culture B (ICEPIC B)(a total of 25 points), and a first-year European language (37.5 points). Students may commence language-study at second-year and in that case would be required to complete four semesters of language study for completion of the major in Modern European Studies. Where students are completing second-year language study in a European language in conjunction with the major in Modern European Studies, two additional subjects from an approved list may be substituted for the two semesters of language study.
There is no separate honours program in Modern European Studies. However, students may choose to specialise in this area in another honours program for which they have qualified. Each honours program has its own prerequisites and minimum standards requirements. For details of these requirements students should refer to the entry under the area of study concerned.
Students will choose appoved single-semester subjects as well as pursuing two semesters of language to intermediate or advanced level. Languages offered are French, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Russian and (through La Trobe University) Spanish.
Note: Departments may require prerequisites for any second or third-year
