Medieval Studies (Interdepartmental Program)
Convenor:Associate Professor Anne Gilmour-Bryson (History).
The program offers students a means of developing or extending an interest in the European Middle Ages. The program draws on subjects offered by individual departments, offers coursework in Latin and Ancient Greek, and adds other departmental offerings in Classics and Near Eastern Studies, English, Fine Arts, History and Philosophy, as well as providing an interdepartmental seminar for fourth-year honours students.
The program begins at first-year level. Students wishing to complete a mixed major in Medieval Studies may count any Grade 1 subject as the foundation of this mixed major. Enrolment in Beginners' Latin, or Ancient Greek, preliminary courses in other medieval languages, and particular courses in all the participating departments are especially recommended in first year.
A normal prerequisite for admission to any second or third-year History subject will be successful completion of a double-semester first-year History subject although the Head of the Department of History may approve exceptions to this rule in particular cases.
A normal prerequisite for admission to the Medieval Philosophy subjects will be Philosophy 1A or 1B although the Head of the Department of Philosophy may approve exceptions to this rule in particular cases.
Students wishing to continue taking subjects in any particular Department may be unable to do so if they have not taken a first-year subject in that department.
A normal prerequisite for admission to any second-year English subject is successful completion of one double-semester first year unit.
The major in Medieval Studies consists of at least five subjects completed at second and third-year levels, totalling 83.3 points, chosen from the lists below. Within these five subjects, two semesters of sequential language study must be completed from those language-study subjects listed below. If the language requirement has been met at first-year level, two other subjects from the list of non-language subjects may be substituted.
In order to maintain the necessary interdepartmental nature of the major in Medieval Studies, all components of the major may not be taken in the same department.
There is no separate honours program in Medieval Studies. However, students may choose to concentrate in the area of Medieval Studies in another Honours program for which they have qualified. (NOTE: each department has its own criteria for entry to Honours). A fourth-year Interdepartmental seminar will be available on Chivalry and Courtly Love. For details see the Convenor, Associate Professor Anne Gilmour-Bryson, Dept of History.
