There are three first-year subjects in German. A pass in VCE or equivalent is assumed for Advanced German First Year. Intermediate German is designed for students with some prior knowledge of German. Beginners' German requires no prior knowledge of German. There is an additional first-year subject on Germany in the 20th century (German Literature and Society) taught entirely in English and consisting of two independent semesters which may be taken in addition to any first-year German subject or on their own.
The language stream or level in which a student enrols will be determined by the Department. Placement will be based on the students' VCE results, other language study record or a placement test. However, enrolment will remain provisional until confirmed or, alternatively, altered in the light of new evidence that might emerge during the first weeks of teaching. As far as possible, changes will be notified in the first two weeks of semester. Changes in weeks 3 and 4 will have to be reported to the Associate Dean.
The non-language components of all German subjects are called Special Studies units. The content of these units varies from year to year. Details of the options on offer in any given year can be obtained from the Department. Special Studies units are intended to permit students to specialise in linguistics, background or literature or any combination thereof right from first year.
A major in German requires the completion of 83.3 points in German language subjects at second and third-year level (or a combination of both levels) which must include Advanced German Third Year A and B as well as one of German Parts 3E to 3K or German Third Year A and B (Intermediate) plus one of German Parts 3E to 3K if proceeding from Beginners' German.
Admission to the honours course in the School of German is conditional upon completion of a major in German and completion of all the requirements for the pass degree. Candidates must normally have gained at least second class honours over their major. Students must be approved by the Faculty and the Department. Students undertaking Combined Honours must also meet the prerequisites for honours in the combining department.
Pure Honours: Students enrol in four fourth-year level subjects (German Parts 4E to 4K at 16.7 points each) and 126-400 German Honours Thesis (33.3 points).
Combined Honours: students complete two fourth-year level subjects (2 x 16.7 points) and, if they choose to submit their thesis to the German Department, the above thesis subject.
Note: Subjects 126-361/461 to 126-367/467 will only be offered if there is a minimum of six participants.
