Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies) involves the history and theory of the Visual Arts including Cinema, Materials and Techniques of Art and Museums and Connoisseurship. Subjects offered range from the art of the Greek and Roman period, through Byzantine, Medieval, Renaissance, the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries, to Modern and Postmodern and/or Contemporary Art and Cinema. Subjects in Australian Art History are one of the Department's strengths. Art History demands a variety of approaches and methods. It involves the documentation of works of art and placing them in their historical context. Art History is also concerned with the different responses to art in various historical eras. The discipline investigates modes of visual communication using the theory of signs and methods developed in cultural anthropology.
Career opportunities for graduates in Art History and Cinema Studies include teaching, academic careers and careers in the arts industry, as directors or curators of art galleries and museums, or as arts administrators.
Not all subjects are offered each year, but the Department tries to offer, in alternate years, several of its subjects so that they may be taken at second or third-year level. These subjects are offered in two areas of study, Art History and Cinema Studies. All Cinema Studies subjects are accepted as Art History subjects and can be taken as part of an Art History major. Students can also specialise in Cinema Studies. Cinema Studies subjects are listed under 'Cinema Studies'. Art History subjects and fourth year Cinema Studies subjects are listed below. The two areas of study are interrelated and the requirements for both are given below.
There are no specific prerequisites for entry to Fine Arts.
The prerequisite for a second semester first year Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies) subject is normally a first semester first year subject offered by the Fine Arts Department.
The prerequisite for a second or third year Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies) subject is normally 25 points in subjects offered by the Department at first year level.
The prerequisite for a subject offered at both third and fourth year levels in Fine Arts is normally 33 points at second/third year in Fine Arts subjects.
A major in Art History consists of at least five subjects offered by the Department at second and third year level, totalling 83.3 points. At least three of these Subjects should be in the non Cinema area of Art History.
Students intending to undertake Pure Honours are advised to take at least a major in Fine Arts(Art History and Cinema Studies). Up to 10 subjects (a total of 167 points) may be taken at second and third year. Students should note that fourth year Cinema Studies subjects have as a prerequisite at least three cinema studies subjects at second or third year level and fourth year Art History subjects have as a prerequisite at least two second or third year Art History subjects, excluding Cinema Studies.
Admission to fourth year honours is subject to completion of the requirements of a pass degree and must first be approved by the Head of Department. The prerequisite is normally a major in Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies), with an average overall grade of at least H2B in the five subjects comprising the major.
