Australian Studies (Interdepartmental Program)

The program in Australian Studies consists of two parts, an undergraduate program based in a number of Arts Faculty Departments and an interdepartmental fourth year and postgraduate program housed in the Australian Centre.
Students considering enrolling in the program are advised to take 25 points at first-year level from the following:

The prerequisite for entry to Australian Studies combined honours is a major in Australian Studies with an overall average grade of H2A or better, and admission to honours in another area of study within the Faculty. Students undertaking an Honours program in English, Fine Arts, Geography, History or Politics are also able to enrol in Australian Studies Fourth Year semester units as part of their Honours program in their respective Departments.
Combined honours in Australian Studies requires the completion of two single semester units in Australian Studies (33.3 points), two semester units in another Department and a thesis in either Department.
Prerequisites: The prerequisite for entry to Australian Studies fourth year is a major in Australian Studies with an overall average grade of H2A or better including two Australian Studies semester units, and admission to fourth year in another area of study within the Faculty. Students undertaking an Honours programme in English, Fine Arts, History or Politics are also able to enrol in Australian Studies Fourth Year semester units as part of their Honours programme in their respective Departments.
Objectives: Students completing the course should:
- have an increased understanding of Australian society and culture, both in the past and the present;
- have further developed analytic skills appropriate to the area - both text-critical and contextual;
- have some understanding of the ways in which the disciplines create and define knowledge of Australian culture and society;
- have an enhanced sense of the relationship of local Australian studies to an international context;
- have effective writing and communication skills.
