Applied Linguistics is part of the School of Languages. This field draws upon knowledge and methods from several other academic disciplines, including linguistics, modern languages, anthropology, sociology and psychology. It provides theoretical concepts for understanding the relationships between language use, social forces, psychological processing and cultural patterns.
The department's program is designed to provide theoretical and empirical insights into issues of language use and language acquisition. The subjects should be of particular interest to students in language departments, but will also appeal to any students interested in language issues.
Graduates with a major in Applied Linguistics gain an enhanced understanding of how people learn first, second and foreign languages and of how language is used in the community. The skills obtained are useful for language teachers, interpreters, language evaluation and assessment and a variety of jobs where language and communication are a concern.
Entry to this program is at second year level. The normal prerequisite is 12.5 points of first-year level linguistics or 25 points of Psychology.
At present no major exists in Applied Linguistics. The study of Applied Linguistics may be combined with subjects from other disciplines to form a major in English Language, Linguistics or a language.
An honours program in Applied Linguistics is currently being developed.
