American Studies (Interdepartmental Programme)

The Faculty of Arts offers an Interdepartmental Programme in American Studies housed in the Department of Political Science.


Prerequisites

Entry into the American Studies major is available from second year. Students planning to enter the American Studies major may wish to take one of the following subjects at first year :


Requirements for a Major

A major in American Studies requires the completion of at least five subjects at second and third-year level, which must include the core subject 'The Making of State and Society in the USA', together with four subjects selected from the list of second and third year subjects below.

Requirements for Combined Honours in American Studies

(Available from 1997)

Students must take two single semester American Studies subjects from the following list (or alternative subjects if approved by the Convener of the American Studies Interdepartmental Programme). Entry into Combined Honours is available to those who have qualified for entry into combined honours in the combining area of study and have completed a major in American Studies with an average of H2A or above. Prospective Combined Honours students should submit an outline of their proposed course of study and a thesis proposition form to the Convener of the American Studies Programme by the end of the academic year preceding commencement of Honours. Students should enrol in the Honours Thesis subject in the Department in which supervision will be provided.
