Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should have developed:
- a greater understanding of the ways in which an individual interacts as a member of a community in terms of civil rights, duties and obligations;
- skills in the critical evaluation of the theoretical underpinnings of laws in this area;
- skills in statutory interpretation;
- an ability to evaluate critically the development of law through judicial decision-making and legislation;
- an enthusiasm for, and an interest in, the study of legal issues in this area.
Content:
An examination of the civil rights, obligations and duties which arise through daily interaction as a member of a community. The subject evaluates the role of case and statute law in the development of the obligations.
Assessment:
Research work 2,000 words (50%) and a 2-hour final examination (50%).
