Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should be able to:
- understand the major legal structures and organisations which impinge on social work practice;
- have a beginning knowledge of legislation affecting individuals, children and families;
- be aware of the ethical and legal responsibilities of social workers;
- be aware of the values and principles underpinning the law, and differences between a 'legal' and social work orientation to decision making and practice.
Content:
The relationship between law and social work, including an analysis of such issues as the Australian legal system, protection of human rights in Australia, the role of the state in income maintenance, state intervention in the family, criminal law, domestic violence and the ethics of practice.
Assessment:
Written assignments of up to 5,000 words.
