Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the context of Australian social work practice, with emphasis on social inequality as it is produced and re-produced through socio-economic class, race, ethnic and gender power relations;
- be familiar with social change processes as they are reflected in social policy and community services development in Australia;
- comprehend different theoretical approaches to understanding the provision of 'welfare' or social well-being and the development of social policy;
- understand the development of the social work profession, in particular within the Australian context.
Content:
A critical analysis of the development of social work within the context of the Australian state, its social policy responses and the development of community services. Social Work's professional role in relation to social inequality and social change movements concerning class, race, ethnicity and gender.
Assessment:
Written assignments of up to 4,000 words.
