Prerequisite: 3rd year: Any two second year level criminology subjects; 4th year: Admission to Criminology Honours.
Contact: One 1-hour lecture and one 2-hour seminar per week.
Timetable: First semester
Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should be able to:
- understand the major criminological studies of decision making;
- apply these studies to the operation of the criminal justice system;
- use the main techniques appropriate to the study of decision making.
Content:
An examination of theoretical and empirical studies of decision making in criminal justice and their implications for the operation of the criminal justice system; an introduction to techniques appropriate to the study of decision making.
Assessment:
Up to 5,000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6,000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
