Prerequisite: 3rd year: Any two second year level Criminology subjects; 4th year: Admission to Criminology Honours.
Contact: One 1-hour lecture and one 2-hour seminar per week.
Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should:
- be familiar with and understand the way in which the criminal law applies to the practice of medicine in Australia and overseas at present and in the past;
- be aware of the limitations and problems associated with regulating medical practice by the use of the criminal law;
- be able to discuss the issues presented in class, present the results of library research, and contribute to class discussions in an informed and confident way;
- be able to conduct library research into a chosen medico-legal criminological issue and produce a logically structured, coherent, and concise evaluative essay setting out prior research on the topic in question, and suggesting ways in which problems could be addressed in the future.
- be able to write the essay referred to above in accordance with stated publication style guidelines.
Content:
An examination of criminal behaviour relating to medical practice, including an analysis of certain medical theories of offending, the involvement of medicine in criminal justice agencies, the professional regulation of medicine, and consideration of various criminal offences related to medical practice.
Assessment:
Up to 5,000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6,000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
