Prerequisite: 3rd year: Any two second-level criminology subjects; 4th year: Admission to Criminology Honours.
Contact: One 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar per week.

Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should be able to:
- analyse critically the role of nation-states in promoting, regulating and carrying out violence against individuals, communities and states;
- understand justifications and critiques of official violence in social theory;
- critically examine and deconstruct theories of the 'state', 'genocide', ethnicity and masculinity in relation to state-sanctioned violence;
- demonstrate an understanding of methods and techniques useful for analysing information about violence and the state, including oral history, document analysis and analysis of official statistics;
- demonstrate an ability to carry out independent research on state violence using an appropriate range of sources and techniques
Content:
The subject examines the role of the nation-state in promoting, regulating and carrying out violence. Case studies may include the white settlement of Australia, the Holocaust, the slave trade and corporal punishment in schools.
Assessment:
Up to 5,000 words written work at 3rd year level and 6,000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
