191-307/407 Sentencing Theory and Practice

Prerequisite: 3rd-year: Any two second year-level Criminology subjects; 4th-year: Admission to Criminology Honours.

Contact: A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar.

Content:

An examination of sentencing law, the sentencing process, the purposes and justifications of sentences, judicial discretion and sentencing guidelines, and the nature and effectiveness of the sentencing options available to the courts.

Assessment:

Up to 5,000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6,000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
