Prerequisite: Normally 25 points of first-year Criminology.
Contact: Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial per week.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- have a general understanding of different conceptions of crime, the divisions of law, the basic concepts of criminal liability and criminal procedure;
- appreciate the nature of legal discourse and reasoning.
- be able to identify specific areas of criminalisation and de-criminalisation and understand the significance of the process;
- develop skills in dealing with legal sources
- be able to conduct library and field research into aspects of criminal law and procedure.
Content:
Conceptions of crime, the role of criminal law in regulation of behaviour, concepts of criminal responsibility and procedure.
Assessment:
Up to 5,000 words of written work. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
