Prerequisite: Completion of a major in English Language with grades averaging at least H2A. Subjects offered under this rubric may, in some years, have specific prerequisites from among the English Language electives, e. g. Semantics, Formal Syntax or Phonetics/Phonology.
Contact: Three hours of lectures/seminars. per week.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should have:
- an advanced understanding of current debates in a particular area of the linguistics of English;
- developed research and argumentation skills to a level where they can present original analyses, orally and verbally, in a particular area.
Content:
A course of advanced lectures, whose topic may vary from year to year, given by members of the department or visiting scholars. Typical topics: Pragmatics and Semantic Change in English; Anaphora in English; English Lexicography; Intonation in English.
Assessment:
Not more than 6,000 words in written work.
