Objectives:
By the end of the subject, students should:
- be familiar with a number of the major problems of analysis and description in current semantic theory;
- demonstrate an understanding of the competing approaches which have been taken to these problems in linguistics and related disciplines such as philosophy;
- have developed skills in formal semantic analysis.
Content:
Introduction to formal semantics, and consideration of a range of current topics in semantic theory.
Assessment:
Regular practical exercises and two written-up class presentations, totalling no more than 5,000 words.
