Contact: Two lectures and a 1-hour tutorial a week.

Objectives:
By the end of the subject, students should:
- understand and be able to identify the ways in which social factors influence language;
- have developed an appreciation of the role of language in society;
- have become familiar with and be able to apply the central techniques of sociolinguistic research.
Content:
How social factors influence language, and the role of language in society.
Assessment:
Three practical projects and an essay, totalling 5,000 words.
