Prerequisite: 12.5 points of Linguistics at first-year level or Departmental approval.
Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
By the end of the subject, students should:
- have acquired skills of syntactic argumentation and critical evaluation of syntactic arguments;
- understand what is meant by the 'generative' approach to syntax and be familiar with the central issues in current generative syntax;
- be able to identify and describe the important syntactic constructions in English, and be familiar with the generative analyses of these constructions.
Content:
An introduction to the principles and techniques of a formal syntactic theory/theories as applied to the analysis of English; to syntactic argumentation; and to current issues in syntactic theory.
Assessment:
Regular assignment problems, a mid-semester examination and a take-home examination, totalling 5,000 words.
