Objectives:
By the end of the subject, students should:
- have a general understanding of how and why languages change;
- have developed practical skills in determining the genetic relationships between languages and reconstructing past states of languages.
Content:
The how and why of language change, with training in how to reconstruct genetic relationship between languages.
Assessment:
Regular assignment problems and an essay, totalling 5,000 words.
