Objectives:
By the end of the subject, students should:
- have developed skill in perceiving and articulating the speech sounds of the world's languages;
- be able to apply these skills in transcribing the sounds of different languages;
- have acquired general familiarity with some approaches to phonological analysis.
Content:
The sound distinctions occurring in human languages; basic articulatory, acoustic and auditory phonetics.
Assessment:
Regular practical assignment problems and a project paper, totalling 5,000 words.
