Year 1 Linguistics.
Credit points: 12.5 1st year

Prerequisite: No special prerequisites. It is not necessary to know a language other than English to study Linguistics.
Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
Students completing first-year Linguistics subjects should:
- have a general understanding of the nature of human language;
- have begun to develop skills for describing and analyzing languages;
- have gained a conceptual framework for thinking about and discussing language.
Content:
Syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, and historical linguistics; selected topics in applied linguistics.
Assessment:
Regular problem-solving exercises and a 2000-word essay, totalling 4,000 words.
