Year 1 Linguistics.
Credit points: 12.5 1st year
Coordinator: Dr Kate Burridge.
Prerequisite: No special prerequisite. It is not necessary to know a language other than English to study Linguistics.
Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week.

Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- have a general understanding of the nature of human language;
- have begun to develop skills for describing and analyzing languages;
- have gained a conceptual framework for thinking about and discussing language.
- have gained a broad familiarity with the history and structure of English.
Content:
The origins and history of English, grammar and meaning, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, Australian English, dialects and accents of English, and pidgins and creoles; selected topics in applied linguistics.
Assessment:
Three problem-solving assignments, a 2000-word essay and a take-home examination paper, totalling 4,000 words.
