Objectives:
Students who complete this subject will have:
- an advanced understanding of the main traditions of political theory and philosophy as they impact upon modern problems of governance;
- developed skills in the analysis of key theoretical problems of responsibility and accountability in the modern state;
- analysed contemporary policy issues in such fields as health, environment and welfare from a theoretical perspective;
- developed skills in interpretation, critical thinking and reasoning within a policy context.
Content:
An advanced seminar which aims to introduce students to contemporary debates regarding the role and function of policy making in modern society. This seminar will examine key philosophical traditions and concepts, ethical issues and problems associated with contemporary governance.
