166-435 The Arab-Israeli Conflict

Year 4 Politics.

Credit points: 16.7 4th year

Prerequisite: Admission to fourth-year Political Science.

Contact: A 2-hour seminar a week.

Timetable: Second semester

Objectives:

The main objective of this subject is to enable students to critically evaluate the basic problems underlying the Arab-Israeli Conflict by delineating and comparing the specific traits of this conflict with others.

Content:

The way the Arab-Israeli Peace process has handled the underlying problems in the relations between the Arabs and Israelis. The issues that will be explored include the interaction between the adversaries, the dilemmas in their modes of operation, their positions and national programmes and the role of Western powers in the conflict and its potential resolution. An analysis of documents will help students gain an understanding of the role played by interpretation in exacerbating and/or diffusing political conflict.

Assessment:

Written work totalling 6,000 words.
