Objectives:
Upon completion of the subject, students should:
- be able to analyse critically the different feminist perspectives - poststructuralist, radical, lesbian, socialist - on issues concerning the body and sexuality;
- be able to critically assess the ways in which such issues as prostitution, child sexual abuse and domestic violence are currently approached within public policy;
- be able to suggest public policy initiatives in such areas which would advance gender equity;
- have a grasp of the practical and theoretical issues regarding the problem of violence against women and sexual exploitation which will be of value to those intending to work in any areas of the public service, or in the private sphere where issues of gender equity will be relevant.
Content:
The way that very different feminist perspectives have developed on a range of issues concerning sexuality and violence against women and whether some common understandings can be reached about the effects of these on womens lives and opportunities. The effectiveness of public policy on such issues, e. g. intervention orders, tabletop dancing legislation, censorship, will be examined.
Assessment:
Written work totalling 6,000 words.
