Objectives:
On completion of the subject the student will have:
- an understanding of the historical reasons for the emergence of the European Community/European Union;
- gained a critical knowledge of the dynamics and broader implications of the existence of the European Community/Union;
- an understanding of challenges posed by the existence of the EC/EU to traditional and classical political categories, such as citizenship, nationality and statehood;
- the ability to critically evaluate questions surrounding the issue of the EC/EUs political identity, eg. in what ways is the EC an economic community? in what ways is it a political community? who is included in European Union, and who is excluded?
Content:
The meaning of European Union under the microscope of political science analysis by looking at theoretical approaches to European Integration and examining different ideas about what constitutes a state, political system or government; the potential for a common European Community foreign and security policy, particularly in the light of Maastricht; the issue of migrants rights and the challenge of neofascism and racism.
Assessment:
Written work totalling 6,000 words.
