Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should:
- have an understanding of the domestic and international content of Australian foreign relations;
- have an understanding of the implications of a range of global and regional issues for Australia;
- have developed their skills of political analysis in relation to the above.
Content:
An introduction to Australian foreign relations, with reference to both global and regional issues affecting Australia. Topics will normally include: the domestic politics of Australian foreign relations; relations with the US and Europe (including the UK); Asia-Pacific issues, including relations with China, Japan, South-East Asia and the South-West Pacific; defence and peacekeeping issues, human rights, environmental issues and trade.
Assessment:
Essay work or equivalent totalling 5,000 words.
