Year 4 Philosophy.
Credit points: 11.1 4th year
Coordinator: Dr Barry Taylor.
Prerequisite: Entry to fourth-year Honours.
Contact: Two hours a week.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
After completing this subject, students should have gained:
- a detailed knowledge of some of the most influential and powerful contemporary philosophical ideas;
- knowledge of the major criticisms which have been levelled against these ideas;
- the background necessary for full appreciation of much contemporary philosophical debate, centring around these ideas, their evaluation, and elaboration.
Content:
Problems and issues of central interest in current philosophical debate.
Assessment:
One 3-hour end-of-semester examination. An alternative assessment by up to 4,000 words of essay-work (either during the semester or as a take-away examination) may be permitted; students unable to complete this essay by the due date will be required to sit the examination. Students will be advised in the first week of the subject if this option is available.
