Year 4 Philosophy.
Credit points: 11.1 4th year
Coordinator: Dr Chris Cordner.
Prerequisite: Entry to fourth-year Honours.
Contact: Two hours a week.
Timetable: First semester
Objectives:
Through the work undertaken in this subject students should:
- have become acquainted with some central themes and preoccupations of recent philosophical thought about ethics;
- be able to think critically about the assumptions and commitments inherent in the themes discussed;
- have acquired a background out of which they can think better and more deeply about the ethical dimensions of human life.
Content:
An advanced study of problems and issues in contemporary ethics.
Assessment:
One 3-hour end-of-semester examination. An alternative assessment by up to 4,000 words of essay-work (either during the semester or as a take-away examination) may be permitted; students unable to complete this essay by the due date will be required to sit the examination. Students will be advised in the first week of the subject if this option is available.
