161-436 Philosophy of Knowledge and Rational Inquiry I

Year 4 Philosophy.

Credit points: 11.1 4th year

Coordinator: Dr Bruce Langtry.

Prerequisite: Entry to fourth-year Honours.

Contact: Two hours a week.

Timetable: Second semester

Objectives:

Students will gain an acquaintance with a topic of current research interest in the area of epistemology and/or decision theory. They will be able to read, evaluate, and respond to research literature in such areas.

Content:

An advanced study of problems and issues in contemporary epistemology and methodology.

Assessment:

One 3-hour end-of-semester examination. An alternative assessment by up to 4,000 words of essay-work (either during the semester or as a take-away examination) may be permitted; students unable to complete this essay by the due date will be required to sit the examination. Students will be advised in the first week of the subject if this option is available.
