Year 4 Philosophy.
Credit points: 11.1 4th year
Coordinator: Dr Allen Hazen.
Prerequisite: Entry to fourth-year Honours.
Contact: Two hours a week.
Timetable: First semester
Objectives:
Upon completion of the subject a student should:
- be able to interpret a major difficult text from the history of philosophy;
- be able to critically compare and assess conflicting interpretations of a text;
- be able to discuss a text from the history of philosophy in the light of current philosophical problems, arguments, and theories.
Content:
One or more works of great philosophers of the past dealing with epistemology and/or metaphysics.
Assessment:
One 3-hour end-of-semester examination. An alternative assessment by up to 4,000 words of essay-work (either during the semester or as a take-away examination) may be permitted; students unable to complete this essay by the due date will be required to sit the examination. Students will be advised in the first week of the subject if this option is available.
