161-431 Fourth-Year Contemporary European Philosophy

Year 4 Philosophy.

Credit points: 11.1 4th year

Coordinator: Dr Marion Tapper.

Prerequisite: Entry to fourth-year Honours.

Contact: Two hours a week.

• Objectives: After completion of the subject, students should:
• have a detailed understanding of some major texts in contemporary European philosophy;
• be able to critically evaluate these texts;
• be able to relate these texts to others in the history of philosophy and apply the themes considered to contemporary issues in philosophy.

Timetable: First semester

Content:

Heidegger's critique of metaphysics.

Assessment:

One 3-hour end-of-semester examination. An alternative assessment by up to 4,000 words of essay-work (either during the semester or as a take-away examination) may be permitted; students unable to complete this essay by the due date will be required to sit the examination. Students will be advised in the first week of the subject if this option is available.
