Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Objectives:
At the completion of this subject students should be able to:
- display an understanding of the key notions and central philosophical doctrines of Buddhist thought;
- have an understanding of the contemporary significance of Buddhist philosophy.
Content:
This subject covers the Buddhist account of suffering as deriving from the illusion of permanence and the self.
Assessment:
One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50 per cent), and an essay of no more than 3,000 words (50 percent).
