Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Objectives:
At the completion of this subject students should:
- have a good grasp of the basic concepts and issues surrounding the computational conception of mind, as well as the main arguments in the area;
- be familiar with a range of classic literature in the area;
- be prepared for advanced work in the philosophy of cognitive science.
Content:
A study of the most important contemporary version of mechanism, the computational conception of mind. The subject covers basic concepts and arguments both in favour of and against the position.
Assessment:
One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50 per cent) and an assignment of no more than 3,000 words (50 per cent).
