Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
At the completion of this subject students should have:
- a critical appreciation of the work of two major contemporary European thinkers;
- acquired the ability to critically assess and apply the theoretical frameworks studied in the subject to issues that arise in contemporary cultural practices.
Content:
A study of the later work of Foucault and Habermas and its bearing on contemporary cultural practices.
Assessment:
Two written assignments each of no more than 2,500 words (50 per cent each).
