Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Timetable: First semester
Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should be able to::
- discern the philosophical implications of questions about the nature and interpretation of music;
- understand the ways value judgements and theories of meaning in music have been grounded;
- see how Western musical traditions have shaped key background concepts.
Content:
A philosophical exploration of a number of issues arising in connection with music, such as: How should we define or understand music? What is the ontological status of a piece of music? How has Western culture constructed important notions such as creativity and authenticity? Where do various theories locate meaning in music?.
Assessment:
One two-hour end-of-semester examination and an essay of up to 3,000 words.
