Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should be able to:
- appreciate in some detail the inter-disciplinary nature of cognitive science and be able to discuss with understanding the ramifications of the issues raised in the subject.
Content:
An examination of the main metaphysical presuppositions and social and ethical implications of recent research programmes in cognitive science, including a comparison and appraisal of computational and connectionist models of mind.
Assessment:
Two essays each of no more than 3,000 words, submitted at mid-semester and end.
