161-231/331 Philosophical Issues in Cognitive Science

Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

An examination of the main metaphysical presuppositions and social and ethical implications of recent research programmes in cognitive science, including a comparison and appraisal of computational and connectionist models of mind.

Assessment:

Two essays each of no more than 3,000 words, submitted at mid-semester and end.
