Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Timetable: First semester
Objectives:
Upon completion of the subject a student should:
- have a general knowledge of the twentieth century phenomenological tradition;
- be able to engage in detailed exegesis and critical discussion of philosophical texts;
- be able to relate methods, arguments and theses put forward by phenomenologists to those in other philosophical traditions;
- demonstrate an ability to critically examine philosophical arguments and theses.
Content:
Major texts and themes in phenomenology and existentialism.
Assessment:
One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50 per cent) and written assignments totalling no more than 3,000 words (50 per cent).
