Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Objectives:
After completing this subject, students should have developed:
- a broad understanding of the doctrines of the Continental Rationalism of the Seventeenth Century;
- a broad understanding of the way in which these doctrines are appraised by contemporary interpreters;
- an insight into the place of metaphysics in Philosophy.
Content:
Seminal texts in the rationalist tradition, distinguished by the view that genuine knowledge can be obtained without recourse to the senses.
Assessment:
One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50 per cent) and an assignment of no more than 3,000 words (50 per cent).
